The New Testament can be divided into several major sections:

The Gospels

The New Testament begins with the four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These books provide accounts of the life, ministry, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  • The Gospel of Matthew emphasizes Jesus as the Messiah and King, tracing His genealogy and birth, and highlighting His teachings, miracles, and fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies.
  • The Gospel of Mark focuses on Jesus as the suffering servant, presenting a concise and action-packed narrative of His ministry, emphasizing His miracles and teachings.
  • The Gospel of Luke presents Jesus as the compassionate Savior and includes detailed accounts of His birth, parables, healings, and interactions with people from all walks of life.
  • The Gospel of John emphasizes Jesus as the divine Son of God, highlighting His identity, signs, teachings, and the purpose of His mission to bring eternal life through faith in Him.

Acts of the Apostles:

The book of Acts, written by Luke, is a historical account of the early Christian Church, recording the ministry of the apostles, the spread of the Gospel, and the establishment of Christian communities.

Acts begins with Jesus' ascension into heaven and the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. It follows the journeys of the apostle Peter and the apostle Paul, documenting their preaching, miracles, persecution, and the growth of the Church in various regions.

The book also addresses the conversion of Saul (later known as Paul), who becomes a key figure in spreading the Gospel to the Gentiles. It concludes with Paul's imprisonment in Rome and his ongoing ministry to the Jews and Gentiles.

Pauline Epistles

The New Testament includes thirteen letters attributed to the apostle Paul—Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon. These letters provide instructions, encouragement, and theological teachings to various churches and individuals.

  • Romans presents a comprehensive exposition of the Gospel, highlighting salvation by faith in Jesus Christ and the righteousness of God.
  • 1 and 2 Corinthians address issues and conflicts within the Corinthian church, including divisions, immorality, spiritual gifts, and the resurrection.
  • Galatians emphasizes justification by faith and freedom in Christ, countering the notion of salvation through adherence to the Jewish law.
  • Ephesians explores the unity of believers in Christ, the spiritual blessings in Christ, and practical instructions for Christian living.
  • Philippians encourages believers to rejoice in all circumstances, to have humility and unity, and to pursue Christ-like character.
  • Colossians focuses on the supremacy of Christ and the importance of holding fast to the true Gospel amid false teachings.
  • 1 and 2 Thessalonians address eschatological matters, including the second coming of Christ and the resurrection of believers.
  • 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus are known as the pastoral epistles, offering guidance for church leadership, pastoral care, and sound doctrine.
  • Philemon is a personal letter urging Philemon to forgive his runaway slave Onesimus and to receive him as a brother in Christ.

General Epistles

The New Testament includes seven general epistles—Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John. These letters were written by various authors and addressed to a broader audience of believers.

  • Hebrews explores the superiority of Christ over the Old Covenant, emphasizing His role as the ultimate High Priest and the mediator of a new and better covenant.
  • James offers practical wisdom for Christian living, emphasizing the importance of faith expressed through good works, patience in trials, and the power of prayer.
  • 1 and 2 Peter provide encouragement and exhortation to suffering believers, focusing on the hope of salvation, living holy lives, and enduring persecution.
  • 1, 2, and 3 John emphasize the themes of love, obedience to God's commandments, discerning false teachers, and the assurance of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Revelation

The final book of the New Testament is the Revelation (also known as the Apocalypse). It is a prophetic book attributed to the apostle John, revealing visions and symbols regarding the end times, the final judgment, and the ultimate victory of Christ.

The Revelation includes messages to seven churches in Asia Minor, apocalyptic visions of heavenly worship, the unveiling of future events, and the ultimate triumph of Christ over evil.

Throughout the New Testament, there are recurring themes of redemption, salvation, the kingdom of God, the deity of Jesus Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, the call to discipleship, the importance of love and unity, and the hope of eternal life.
